mr double downs current top five

Posted by thehookandsling on 18th October 2007

Below are five of the singles which seem to be permanently glued to my turntables at the moment!!

Ernie And The Topnotes - Things Are Better

This is the flipside to Dap Walk and what a belter! An instrumental version of Raymond Winnfield’s differently titled ‘Things Could Be Better’. It’s driven along by the moody sax and syncopated snare. A sure fire winner!!

Robert Parker - Let’s Go Baby (Where The Action Is)

Big on the Northern scene but still doesn’t get enough airplay in my humble opinion!! Its  chugging guitar and big horns, coupled with Robert Parker’s vocals make this a huge favourite of mine.

The Ohio Players  - Funky Worm

Slightly comical with the old granny’s commentry over the top of the track but wait till the bass and synth kicks in!! A G-funk lesson for Snoop Dog!

Tony Bowens And The Soul Choppers - Boilin’ Water

Released by Tony Bowens on his own self titled independent label due to monetary constraints. This doesn’t come round too often and generally always hits three figures from dealers. Worth every penny though!!

Junior & The Classics - Kill The Pain

Released on the Atco subsidiary Magic Touch Records around the end of the 60s this is one tough tune!! Very JB-esque, with heavy drums, heavy horns and heavy everything else!!! Suprisingly doesn’t go for all that much, which makes this a must own.
