Welcome Back

I’m sure many of you, if not all who regularly trawl the musical land of Blog will by now be more than aware of the recent passing of Eddie Bocage. I’d like to apologise for my late arrival on this one, but with no internet connection installed at the new Hook And Sling Compound yet, it proved difficult to get things up on these pages as quickly as I would have liked.

Eddie Bo is yet another artist who seemed to slip under the mainstream radar whilst achieving so much in his long career. A quick look through Martin Lawrie’s fantasticly put together discography over at Soul Generation will confirm this. After making his bones on the New Orleans piano circuit he went on to write, produce and play on a breath taking myriad of records which influenced and molded not only the New Orleans sound but also that of funk and soul music in general.

As I’m sure many other collectors familiar with his work, and maybe even those with just a passing interest in the genre will confirm, Eddie Bo’s records and productions not only instilled that initial spark of interest in a great musical sound, but also went onto fan the flames of obsession for many.

I’ve pulled Hoppin’ John out of his long unauthorised mixtape holiday for this one today and we’ve pooled our Bo 45s to bring you a small but perfectly formed cross section of Eddie Bo’s work. While it was a hugely difficult task to decide which cuts to omit, I hope we’ve included enough of the great ones to make this a good celebration of his career

After a listen through today’s offering it should come as no great surprise to any of you just why we picked the name Hook And Sling for our night and Blog. Anyway enough of me waxing lyrical, as I’m pretty sure my words can’t do as much justice to the mans work as listening to the music in today’s mix would.
