Saturday Night Review / Danny White – The Twitch – Frisco
Posted by thehookandsling on 6th April 2009
Welcome Back!
I hope Monday finds you rested, relaxed and ready to face the week ahead?
Our monthly night at La Havana Bar on Saturday far and away surpassed all our expectations. The newspaper write up from midweek about the night served its purpose as the turn out was definitely swelled with a number of new faces. By 10pm the dance floor was heaving and everyone was getting down to a big dose of Funk and Soul 45s.
A big thank you to Pourang and all the staff at the venue who have been fantastic in helping us push the night forward! Also, as always we appreciate the efforts of those of you that made it out to join us on Saturday. Your continued support makes the night possible and for that we thank you!
We managed to keep all the 45s that we played on Saturday night in order so that we could drop the play list from the night for you.

The track I bring you today is one from the large grip of 45 I picked up over the previous week. ‘The Twitch’ by Danny White is a fantastic New Orleans R&B stomper from 1963. With dance craze records such as The Twist, The Mash Potato and The Chicken all the rage at the time, this was Danny White’s attempt at cashing in, one can only imagine what the accompanying dance was like!!!.
Originally named Joseph Daniel White, he took on his middle name for his musical career. Interestingly, he was for a short time, a member of Huey “Piano” Smith’s group The Clowns during the early days of the group’s career. Danny White went on to become a big player locally on the New Orleans club circuit. As his career developed he was even cited as a musical influences to the likes of Ernie K. Doe.
‘The Twitch’ was Danny White’s forth single and was released on the Frisco record label. He was one of those artists who never really got picked up by a wider audience, but several of his 45s are highly renowned amongst collectors, including his fantastic 45 ‘Natural Soul Brother’ on SSS Records
Sadly Danny White died from a stroke on the 5th January 1996, a great loss to soul music.
‘The Twitch’ is a full on groove onslaught with really punchy horns and piano licks that keep things rolling along. The handclaps add to the percussion element of the 45 and Danny White’s energetic and powerful vocals make this a great slice of early Nola Rhythm and Blues
I dropped this during my second set on Saturday night and it went down an absolute storm with the dancers at our night, proving just how underrated Danny White’s 45s are.
Enjoy today’s 45 and I’ll be back later in the week with a new Guest Mix from a brand new contributor that I promise will tick all the boxes!!
