The Objectives – Love Went Away – Jewel Records

Posted by thehookandsling on 28th April 2009

Welcome back.

I hope the beginning of the week finds you all well and good?

First up a quick heads up on a few forthcoming events. The Hook & Sling rolls back into town for our monthly Funk And Soul night this Saturday at La Havana Bar in sunny Chichester. The approaching May Bank Holiday will see us also celebrating our third birthday at the venue, so if you’re in the area drop by for what should be another great night.

Jamie Coughlan’s monthly night Bump & Hustle drops on the Saturday 9th May at The Elbow Room in Shoreditch, London. An event which is always worth checking out (that obviously has nothing to do with my regular guest spot!). Expect a good mix of 60’s and 70’s Soul and Funk rarities. More info can be found HERE.

Finally, an old night that I used to co-run and DJ at in London will be emerging from the ashes for a one off (at this time). Betterdays will be back with the usual soul suspects out in force on Saturday 23rd May. We’ll be taking over the long running Saturday Night Stereo at The Lower Ground Bar in West Hampstead, London. Expect an eclectic mix of soulful sounds.

Ok, down to business. As I mentioned in a previous post I’ve picked up a substantial bundle of new 45s from several sources. Over the last week I’ve managed to (slowly) organise and digitise some of them for your listening pleasure.

The 45 I bring to the table today is The Objectives and their 1965 release, ’Love Went Away’ on the Jewel Record Label. Coupled with the flip ‘Oh My Love’ the 45 has seen a resurgence in plays from a number of notable DJ’s lately, including Carolinas aficionado Jason Perlmutter.

There seems to be minimal information around on The Objectives, after a root around the dark recesses of the interwebs I’ve only discovered that they hailed from Greensboro, North Carolina and included band members Charles Cochran and Robert Hampton. I’d be more than interested to hear from anyone who can shed some more light on the band and the 45!

Musically the cut is predominantly guitar led with some nice raw drums thrown into the mix. The falsetto male vocal arrangements are almost Doo-wop-esque in manner and are what turned my ears towards the 45 originally.

Information or no information, I’m sure you’ll agree that The Objectives were definitely a class act! Hopefully we’ll see some of you out on the floor this coming Saturday. For those that can’t make it I’ll be back here shortly with some more of the Good Stuff for you, until then stay safe.
